Problem with Panasonic DMR-E50 Recorder using DVD-R?

I bought 25 Memorex DVD-R 8x 4.7GB and none of them worked. I have read alot about many brands not working & I would like to know if anyone uses anything other than Panasonic disks that work well. Also, do you only use 4x disks. I have read that the firmware update is real crap & everyone says Do Not install it! The model I have is a 2003. Thank you very much for any help offered.

I have memorex dvd-r and memorex dvd+r and they are not working and I downloaded the firmware to use this dvd's,still not working
