Do you think Blu-Ray dvds are here to stay?
I go to the department store here and I see plenty of regular dvd movies. The Blu-Rays have a much smaller section. They do cost more than the regular dvds. I can't see paying $25 for a movie on Blu-Ray. I can find lots of regular dvds in the bargain bin for $5. Besides which, there is probably only 10 or 12 movies on my list that I absolutely must own. If I watch movies on a portable dvd player or computer, the extra benefits of the Blu-Ray would be wasted. I think Blu-Ray would be best played on a home theatre system. What do you think?
Based on what manufactures have on the drawing board I say no. The big hurdle is bandwidth for in home boxes to become standard. Within 5 years for the big city and 10-15 years for rural areas, you will see better than HDTV resolution streaming to the home for viewing on home networks, with minimal equipment to buy. You will have content available in the highest resolution possible as equipment increases in capability. Look for ala carte programing with tivo like playback, sans commercials. You know like pay cable was supposed to be back in the day.
